[Ms_ahead] ADD and request to be excused from greek housing contract

Hi Suzy,
We are getting this type of request more and more often. At Ole
Miss, it is required that Freshman students live on campus their
first year, unless their parents live in Oxford.
For us, the issue of waiving that requirement for students who claim
the dorms are too distracting for studying is considered
unreasonable. The dorms are where students sleep, eat, and
socialize. Yes, they can study if their dorm rooms if they want, but
they are primarily where students LIVE.
There are other places on campus to study - most dorms have study
rooms, there is the library, there are lounges through campus, as
well as other places students can study if the dorms are too
distracting. In addition, students can always self-accommodate if
their dorms are distracting - ear plugs are a wonderful, cheap invention!
So we do not waive the housing requirement for students who want out
simply because it's too distracting to study in the dorms.
We may waive or be flexible with the housing requirements for other
reasons, such as serious medical issues that require specialized
treatment or where having a consistent sleep schedule is essential to
functioning, but not because issues of that involve studying and distraction.
Hope this helps!
Stacey
