July 18, 2008   Dear Colleagues,   WE ARE ACCEPTING FALL 2008 SCHOLARS!    The University of Tennessee has been awarded a five-year, $500,000 grant to train Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors for the Deaf. Our first cohort will begin in the fall of 2008. We are actively seeking scholarship applicants for the online Master’s degree program. UT’s program is both degreed and certified.   Scholars will graduate with a 48-hour Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling with a Deafness focus. The degree is completed in two years. This program is offered as a distance education program with classes online. Scholars will be expected to take an Orientation to Deafness program. They will also complete one full week of counselor skill training on campus during the summer session. All of the projects assigned in class and during the internship will have a focus on working with deaf and hard of hearing clients.   More than 90% of the grant funding is allocated to students. Most if not all expenses are covered through the grant. If you live in one of the following states, and there is no rehabilitation counseling program designed to serve deaf and hard of hearing clients, you will additionally be eligible for Tennessee in-state tuition through the Common Market. The following link will help you determine eligibility for the Common Market. http://www.state.tn.us/thec/2004web/division_pages/academic_pages/acm/acm_pdf/FAQ%20for%20ACM.pdf    It is expected by the time of graduation, RSA scholars will be able to sign at an Intermediate level as described by the Sign Language Proficiency Interview. Signers and Deaf persons are encouraged to apply.   Kindly distribute this to any interested persons.    If you have questions about the program, please contact Dr. Patrick Dunn at the University of Tennessee: pdunn4 at utk.edu. We look forward to serving you.      Kimberly A.
