Subject: Weekly Update, April 4

Good Afternoon,

Following are a few important timely notes to pass along this week.

REQUEST FOR EXPERTISE, INFORMATION, BEST-PRACTICES

As you know, the experience of newly disabled veterans returning from the
war and military conflict and entering higher education is a significantly
growing concern. As institutions look toward being as welcoming and
effective as possible - the need to gather expertise, best-practices,
resources, and ideas is increasing. AHEAD member Paul Grossman is serving
as a first point-of-contact to coordinate the collection of information
particularly relevant to issues related to this effort. Paul is
particularly interested in AHEAD members being in touch with him who have
successful models, best practices, effective policies, or other expert
resources related to newly acquired deafness, post traumatic stress
syndrome, traumatic brain injury, and multiple amputation/severe mobility
changes. If you have anything to offer in this regard or know of resources
that may be useful, please contact Paul Grossman directly by e-mail at
mailto:paul.d.grossman at ed.gov to be a part of this impo!
rtant information gathering and dissemination process. We'll keep you up
dated as this effort continues.

TALK OF THE PROFESSION: INFINITE INTERSECTIONS

Where have you been ... as a DS professional? ...as an academic institution?
Is business-as-usual enough or do you owe it to your students to make some
real change on your campus?

Join AHEAD's three-session "Talk of the Profession: Infinite Intersections"
audio-conference series, beginning April 12th 2007 to discuss this.
Moderator Sue Kroeger of the University of Arizona leads a provocative,
sometimes controversial, exploration of the disability profession intended
to help us think in new ways about our work.

There's still time to register before the first session starts on April 12.
During session one, AHEAD Past Presidents J. Trey Duffy (CalPoly San Luis
Obispo), Sam Goodin (University of Michigan), and current President Carol
Funckes (University of Arizona) will discuss what works and what doesn't in
Disability Services, and where we can be innovative and more effective.
Thought-provoking readings related to service provision and the role of
professionals accompany each audio-conference. To access this important
three-part training opportunity, go to
http://ahead.org/training/audioconference/index.htm to register.

THE NEXT ISSUE OF THE ALERT

ALERT Editor, Alvaro Gomez, is in the process of collecting information,
articles, letters, and calendar listings for the next issue of the
newsletter. Please feel welcome (and wanted) to contribute to the
newsletter; and send your submissions to Alvaro by Friday, April 13th as an
e-mail attachment to: mailto:alvaro at email.unc.edu

Best wishes to you,
