Hello!

Below is some information on a disability-themed art exhibition that will
be opening here at School of the Art Institute next week. Work is by our
students, staff, faculty, and alumni! We have worked hard to make the
exhibition accessible in a number of ways and we are hoping to spread what
we've learned to the other on-campus exhibition and performance spaces and
to help them being incorporating accessible features more routinely! This
has been a great opportunity for students to show their work on disability
themes, and we hope it will be a good opportunity for administrators,
faculty, staff, and other students to understand more about how members of
our community are experiencing and creating art about disability. The
process of putting together the exhibition has allowed us to connect with
lots of people at the school who we would not otherwise have met, and to
tell them about the work that we do and the students we work with. Also,
the connection with the larger festival Bodies of Work: The Chicago
Festival of Disability Arts and Culture has been really great too...the
festival is getting a lot of press here in Chicago and people are very
interested in the programs that are part of it. See www.bodiesofwork.org
for more information on the festival at large (which our exhibition is a
part of).

Hope everyone is doing well and please continue to send any
questions/comments/events/publications/ideas related to disability and the
arts to this list!

Navigation / Negotiation:
A Juried Exhibition of Disability Themed Work
by School of the Art Institute Students, Staff, Faculty, and Alumni

April 21June 12, 2006
Gene Siskel Film Center
164 N State St
Chicago IL 60601

Disability is not lodged within a single body or a single mind; It takes
form as people with disabilities navigate and negotiate the world. The
artists in this exhibition explore disability as both a public and a
private experiencethey navigate through and negotiate with their own minds
and bodies, but also with streets and buildings, with other peoples’ faces,
with the art world, with the health care system, and with stereotypes and
assumptions. These artists turn minds and bodies inside out, revealing
what is often hidden, and opening up the disability experience for viewers
to crawl inside of and explore. The works in this exhibition challenge
traditional ideas of beauty and health, of communication and learning, of
fashion and product design, and of the relationship between the senses and
art. The strong interest among artists at the School of the Art Institute
of Chicago to explore disability in their work is part of a larger global
movement. By continuing to support and nourish the exploration of
disability in art and the creation of accessible spaces for disabled
artists and audience members, we can help to shape a future in which art
and disability are navigated and negotiated in entirely new ways.
