I have been feverishly compiling all the responses I have received
regarding your experience/feelings about Access Text. I sent out the same message
to five other listservs that I sent here. Thus far, I have received almost
4 dozen responses. They seem to be running almost 50/50 for and against,
but a slight edge to being against the use of ATN (and some of the
"positives" offered mixed reviews). There are a few interesting side notes...

...The folks who were most positive about the service were those who have
VERY high demand for alternative text, and found that ATN saved them lots of
hours of their own time, thus justifying the cost, and those who had very
low demand for alternative text, were one-person shops, and simply felt they
couldn't manage to meet the demand by themselves. AND... those who were
most against the idea were those who had VERY high demand for alternative text
(and were frustrated with the fact that ATN didn't cover all the publishers
and had enough internal help to do it themselves), and those with very low
demand who said, "I am not going to pay that kind of money for something that
should already be available. I'll do it myself!" In other words, those
two groups were split down the middle as to how they viewed the cost/benefit
ratio. And I have NO idea what to make of that.

The one thing that most everyone seemed to agree on is that if there IS to
be a charge, it should be on a sliding scale.

For what it is worth...
Janie
