(Please forgive the cross post!)

I just finished putting together a program proposal for next summer's AHEAD
conference, and I realized as I was working on it that it would make a
great mini-course for DSS providers. A (really!) little something to amuse you
during the waning weeks of Fall term. Experience suggests that the best
time for DSS providers to have a chance to concentrate on new information is
during those FEW times when they are on campus but are at a lull in their
activities. The last week of class and Finals week generally fit that
description. While you have the occasional emergency to deal with, and you may
be proctoring LOTS of exams, this term's problems are generally resolved and
it is too early to start on next term's activities. SO… I am proposing a
(really) short course, online, to run from December 9 - December 16. I
figure by then you will be free but you won't yet be gone!

Oh… you want to know about the topic? OK.

“Understanding the Needs of Students with Speech/Language/Communication
Disabilities”

This class is not meant to be everything-you-need-to-know. We don't have
enough time for that. We are simply going to share some practical (and
needed) information about issues that arise rarely, but are of significant
concern when they do. The class will spend two days on each of three topics:
1) Stuttering
2) Impact of deafness on language development (and the academic
implications!)
3) The “care and feeding” of students with disabilities that impact on
their speech/language

We will be answering such questions as:
- What kind of documentation should I ask for from a stutterer?
- What (and why) are sign-to-print errors?
- What the heck is apraxia of speech - and why do I need to care?
- What is a reasonable accommodation for a stutterer in a discussion-based
class?
- Why would a deaf student request extended time on a written exam?
- How do you get a student with CP (who cannot speak) through a Speech
class?

You get the idea. The class will be conducted entirely through a private
listserv. If you are reading this message, you have all the equipment and
technology savvy necessary to fully participate.

And the cost? This is going to be my holiday gift to the DSS community,
so I am setting the price REALLY low, with two extras thrown in, and two
caveats.

$50. That's it. $50 for the class.

Extras:
- The $50 is for institutional participation; you can send me as many email
addresses for folks from your institution as you choose. The more the
merrier.
- I would be happy to prepare documentation of .5 CEU's from the DAIS
Academy for anyone who might be able to use the credit for some professional
certification procedure

Caveats:
- No discounts this time around (I already cut the price in half! GRIN)
- No invoicing; you can pay by check or by credit card, but I am not
fiddling with institutional paperwork to get approval; you have to figure that
part out on YOUR end!
